Agreement Maxim


Human as social creature surely stay relates to others. Within this relation, sometimes there is a friction caused of differences that people cannot deny, though they already know that everybody in this world actually never be the same.
Yesterday I reread a book of mine when I was in college entitled Meaning in Interaction: an Introduction to Pragmatics that was written by Jenny Thomas. One of its chapters discusses the Agreement Maxim which says "Minimize the expression of disagreement between self and other; maximize the expression of agreement between self and other." What a nice statement!
Today, people are so busy to trouble themselves of something that should not be confused of. When Ramadhan comes, people (especially in social media) are busy claiming which Ramadhan beginning is the truest according to their version. However, it is actually the case of belief. Whether they want to fast first following the Islamic mass organization, or they want to follow the government decision, it already has its own guide. Unfortunately, it has been continuous annual bad habit.
More, the differences of the president choice, whether Prabowo or Jokowi. I think you will be with me in this case, that we have been so sick seeing negative and black campaign from the both supporters. Thanks God the campaign period has been over, anyway.
The point that I want to write here is actually about the politeness, about the deference in diversity. Back to the agreement maxim above, it seems that everything will be so beautiful if we could maximize the expression of agreement between self and other rather than focusing on the disagreement or differences.
Just like the difference I stated above about the decision of Ramadhan beginning, won’t it be beautiful if we notice that we are the same Moslem whose sight is just not same? It won’t change the belief of us right? Then for the difference in President Choice, how beautiful if we remember that all of us only hope the same for our nation, that is betterment. About the different choice, it is only the case of the specific personal criteria, but our dreams are actually the same. We are still the same, Indonesian, who do want a good leader for this nation.
            In sum, I just want to remind you and myself that focusing on agreement is much better than arguing the disagreement.

  Masih kuingat betul pertemuan pertamaku dengan Ory, saat itu dalam kegiatan debat Bahasa Inggris atau dalam madrasah kami disebut English Debate Club (EDC). Menjelang tahun awal pelajaran memang kusampaikan pada murid lama EDC, “Tolong ajak teman yang bagus Bahasa Inggrisnya untuk bergabung di sini, ya.” Lalu akhirnya, diajaklah Ory ke dalamnya oleh Dyna Syarifa, salah seorang dari muridku yang pernah menjuarai lomba pidato tingkat nasional itu. Pertama kali melihat “yang dibawa” Dyna adalah Ory, jujur aku lumayan terkejut. Karena pesanku sebelumnya, “Tolong ajak teman yang bagus Bahasa Inggrisnya.” Namun yang kudapati saat itu, “yang dibawa” adalah satu anak yang sangat jelas nampak tidak percaya diri dan hanya diam saja sepanjang kegiatan. Assalamualaikum… Ceritanya, saya sedang terinspirasi oleh kebaikan seorang dokter gigi di kota saya ini. Singkat cerita, saya punya gigi yang berlubang sangat besar dan telah saya biarkan selama kurang lebih 15 tahun. Kalau tidak salah, gigi geraham saya ini berlubang sejak saya berumur 8 tahun, yaitu kelas 2 SD.  Sedangkan saya sekarang berumur 23 tahun (Parah ya?). Lubang ini saya biarkan saja, karena tidak sakit. Mungkin karena dulu masih kecil jadi kepedulian terhadap kesehatan gigi belum begitu saya perhatikan. Namun lambat laun, lubang ini semakin membesar. Hingga saya besar, saya katakan gigi ini sudah terlanjur sayang . Mau dicabut saya masih eman , tetapi  jika tidak pun lubangnya sangat besar dan sungguh mengganggu setiap kali saya makan. Berulang kali ke dokter gigi mana pun selalu disarankan untuk mencabut, namun saya tetap bersikeras tidak mau. Monday Extensive Speaking

Monday Extensive Speaking 3 Monday Extensive Speaking (MES) is one of newest programs launched by Yayasan Pendidikan Raudlatul Ulum (YPRU) besides Tahfidz, Multimedia Activities, Special Class, and others. Its presence is as a proof that YPRU always keeps improving, in a line with its motto, “One steap ahed in both ‘ ilmu amaly and amal ilmy .” MES is a program delivered by Syaikh Ahmad Ragab Abdela Dessouki from Egypt in every two weeks, and it talked about Islamic things in English            . There are two sessions in every MES meeting; the material delivery and the Q&A session. Monday, October 10 th 2022 was the third meeting of MES, and Syaikh took “The Secret of Tajwid Rules” as the topic. The secret here meant the reasons of the rule. Syaikh asked students in the beginning, “You learn all tajwid rules and you know them, right? But do you know why? Why is idzhar pronounced clearly, while ikhfa’ is not? Anyone knows?”...
