Speak with Kindness, or Not at All
Several days ago, a random post appeared on my Instagram feed. It was about a social media influencer from Bali who underwent breast implant surgery. She shared that she used to be overweight, then decided to work out consistently, and she eventually lost 30 kilos!
Unfortunately, her success brought an unexpected side effect: saggy skin. That
condition led her to make a big decision; She chose to have breast implant
surgery. In the end, she said she was happy with her choice. It was such an
interesting journey that I watched her story until the end.
After that, I found myself
scrolling through her other posts. Then, I realized she was also a model for an
underwear brand. In one of her photos, a netizen left a comment (of her
boobs, sorry) that said, “Cup kecil gitu aja masih kegedean ya. (Even
a small cup still looks too big)”
And I was like, “Seriously?! After all her hard work like her healthy diet, her
weight loss journey, and her success as an influencer, that’s the comment you
decide to leave? For real?”
Isn’t it a universal value to
simply speak kindly? Even for those who don’t believe in any religion, basic
respect should be something everyone agrees on, shouldn’t it?
It’s sad, and it made me
overthink. What if she had the surgery because of such comments? Maybe
from others before? It feels like we live in a world where everyone is
constantly pressured to be perfect—physically, mentally, and socially. People
are expected to please everyone, and it’s exhausting.
Can't people just stop being so
careless with their words?
You never know how deeply your
words might wound someone — how they might plant insecurity in a heart that’s
already fragile. We never truly see what someone is going through behind their
smiles, their filters, or their carefully chosen captions.
The world doesn’t need more ridiculous critics; it needs more kindness. If your
words can heal, use them. If not, let silence speak for you. Because sometimes,
the most powerful form of love and empathy is choosing not to say anything that
could break another soul.
Ps: I don’t judge the influencer’s surgery or her choice to model for an underwear brand. She comes from different backgrounds from mine anyway (cultural and religious) , so yeah, there’s nothing to be debated after all, right?
